Have you ever wondered why some days you feel full of energy and determination, while on other days even the smallest task feels overwhelming?
Yoga explains this through the Manipura Chakra, the third major energy centre, located around the navel. In Sanskrit, Manipura means “city of jewels”, symbolising the immense power and potential that lies within us.
The element associated with this chakra is fire.
Fire transforms. It turns raw ingredients into food, ore into metal, and ideas into reality. In the same way, the Manipura transforms intention into action. It is closely associated with willpower, confidence, discipline, and the ability to persevere.
When this inner fire is balanced, we feel motivated, resilient, and capable of facing life’s challenges. We can process setbacks without becoming discouraged and keep moving towards our goals with quiet confidence.
When the fire becomes weak, however, we may lose motivation, procrastinate, doubt ourselves, or wait endlessly for the “right moment” before taking action. On the other hand, when the fire burns too fiercely, it may express itself as anger, impatience, perfectionism, or the constant need to control people and situations.
Yoga teaches that the goal is not to extinguish this fire or let it rage uncontrollably.
The goal is to keep it steady.
Simple daily habits help cultivate this balance. Eat nourishing food that supports healthy digestion. Keep regular routines. Honour your commitments, even the small ones, because every completed action strengthens self-trust. Traditionally, practitioners also use deep breathing and gently chant the seed mantra RAM, resting their awareness around the navel to cultivate this inner fire.
Swami Vivekananda often spoke about the tremendous reservoir of energy within every human being. His life reminds us that real strength is not loud or aggressive. It is the quiet power that enables us to act with courage, discipline, and purpose.
Perhaps that is the greatest lesson of the Manipura Chakra.
Confidence does not come before action.
It grows every time we choose to act.
