We often say, “I’m lazy” or “I don’t feel motivated”.
But in the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, the problem is usually not laziness.
It is low energy.
More specifically – it is exhausted Prana.
Why You Feel Drained
Vivekananda described the body as an instrument powered by energy.
When that energy is low, even simple tasks feel heavy.
Not because you don’t want to act, but because the system cannot respond.
And this energy is constantly leaking.
Through excessive stimulation.
Through endless thinking.
Through reacting to everything around you.
So by the time you sit down to work,
you’re already depleted.
Why Rest Doesn’t Always Work
The natural response is to rest or sleep.
But not all rest actually restores you.
You can lie down for hours… and still wake up tired.
Because the body may be still, but the mind is still active.
And if the mind doesn’t rest, the system doesn’t recharge.
What Is Conscious Rest
Vivekananda pointed to something different.
Not just sleep but conscious rest.
A state where the body is completely still, and the mind is not engaged outward.
This is similar to what Yoga calls Pratyahara – withdrawing attention from the senses.
You are not chasing thoughts.
You are not reacting.
You are simply aware.
What Happens in That State
When the senses quiet down, energy stops leaking outward.
The system begins to settle.
The breath slows.
The body relaxes.
The nervous system resets.
And in that stillness, energy begins to gather again.
This is why even a few minutes of deep stillness
can feel more refreshing than a long nap.
The 10 min Practice
Below is a simple 10 minute practice to reclaim your energy
1. Sit or lie in a position where you don’t have to move a single muscle.
2. Start a slow, rhythmic breath (count 4 in, 4 hold, 4 out). This “tunes” the Prana.
3. Mentally tell each part of your body to “be still”
4. Instead of thinking of “work”, think of “infinite energy.” Vivekananda believed that the thought of strength actually generates Prana.
Reclaim Your Energy
You are not always tired because you worked too much.
You are tired because your energy is scattered.
When that scattering stops, energy returns.
So the solution is not always more sleep.
Sometimes, it is learning how to rest – consciously.
